Advanced camera systems for ADAS applications

A North German manufacturer of advanced camera systems for ADAS applications approached us asking for support with the lubrication of the actuators. The requirements for the lubricant concern both the quality of the lubrication and the longevity of the lubricant. Even though the actual lubrication point has no contact with the “outside world,” the load levels are high. The actuating mechanisms must function at both extremely high and extremely low temperatures in order to provide optimum results for data processing.

We recommended to the manufacturer to use Molykote® Longterm 2 Plus empfohlen, which has already achieved excellent results with similar applications.

What are ADAS-cameras?

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) cameras are camera sensors installed in the vehicle that collect and evaluate data to assist the driver with specific tasks. ADAS cameras make advanced driver assistance systems possible by capturing and analyzing information about the environment. These cameras quickly and accurately detect other vehicles, pedestrians, obstacles, traffic signs and lane markings. The captured data is analyzed by the software and used to assist the driver in terms of safety and response. There are forward-, side- and rear-facing ADAS cameras. They support assistance systems such as: lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, rear-end collision warning and automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, parking assist, blind spot detection and all-round vision monitoring.

How do ADAS-cameras work?

ADAS-cameras take pictures that are analyzed by a computer. The computer uses certain algorithms to identify and track these objects and determine their distance from the vehicle. Based on the recorded data and the specified algorithm, the ADAS-system then decides how to react in certain situations and whether to initiate emergency braking or an evasive maneuver, for example.

ADAS-cameras are the key to autonomous driving

ADAS-systems use cameras not only for driving assistance functions. These cameras can see and analyze the world around the vehicle and are therefore crucial for the development towards autonomous driving. With their help, automobile manufacturers can achieve the fourth and fifth level of autonomous driving as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Optimal use only with optimal functionality

No matter whether for driving assistants or autonomous driving: The functionality of cameras for ADAS systems is crucial for the safety of the driver, the vehicle and the environment. That is why manufacturers of camera systems have the very highest standards for their products and their functionality. A decisive factor for the quality of a camera are the actuators that ensure the alignment of the camera. They are used to bring the cameras into the desired position and automatically adjust misalignments. As part of the vehicle’s safety system, they must function perfectly under all circumstances.
